Spare a thought for Kilmarnock striker Lee Erwin.

Footballers’ post-match etiquette robbed the Rugby Park new boy of permission to show any kind of satisfaction at scoring his first league goal for the club against Hamilton Academical on Saturday.

Lee McCulloch’s side surrendered a two-goal advantage to their visitors, ensuring that the search for a first league win continues beyond the international break.

Despite Erwin tidily adding to Louis Lonridge’s early own-goal, a thumping Giannis Skondras strike and an 88th-minute Ali Crawford penalty gave Hamilton an unlikely share of the spoils.

The 23-year-old from Bellshill cut an understandably dejected figure afterwards.

“It feels like a defeat, to be honest,” he admitted. “Once we got the second goal I think we backed off and sat in, which we shouldn’t have done.

“It takes the shine off the goal. If we’d gotten the three points it’d be better. The win is the most important thing but that wasn’t to be today.”

The mood inside Rugby Park noticeably shifted when Hamilton full-back Skondras reduced the deficit on 71 minutes and although Steven Smith toppling Greig Docherty in the box was hugely avoidable, there was a certain inevitability about Crawford’s equaliser.

McCulloch’s men do now have a point on the board, but they already trail Saturday’s opponents by six.

Hamilton’s positive early form fuelled belief that the game was still retrievable at 2-0, their persistence duly rewarded when Crawford coolly converted the last-gasp spot-kick.

“I actually had a look around first to see if any of the regular penalty takers were on the pitch,” Crawford laughed. “We’ve shown the fight and character we have in the dressing room and to get a point from 2-0 down is a great result.”
