ALLAN MCGREGOR Restored to the starting line-up in the cup as Wes Foderingham missed out at Hampden. Didn’t have much to do in the first half but angered the Dons as he collided with Mackay-Steven. Could do nothing as Ferguson beat him with a terrific header. 6
JAMES TAVERNIER Gers skipper had to be alert in his own third up against McGinn but wasn’t afraid to get forward and look to influence the game in an attacking sense. Not the worst performer and had a few efforts come to nothing. 7
CONNOR GOLDSON Hasn’t been at his best in recent weeks but coped well with the threat of Wilson as the striker struggled in the first half. Was comfortable overall after the break but won’t want to see the Ferguson goal again as the midfielder headed home. 6
JOE WORRALL Stopper has started to establish himself recently and was impressive once again here. Came out with the ball a couple of times and was the better of the two central defenders. But only just. 6
JON FLANAGAN Beaten a couple of times by Mackay-Steven early on as he found the winger’s pace difficult to deal with. That set the tone for a difficult 90 minutes for the left-back. 6
LASSANA COULIBALY Played his part as the Rangers midfield enjoyed the better of the first half. Covered plenty of ground but had to do more in an attacking sense. Didn’t do enough overall. 6
RYAN JACK Has had mixed fortunes against his former club since moving to Ibrox but showed why he is as important to Gerrard’s side. Always made himself available, kept possession ticking over and broke up attacks. Rangers’ best performer. 8
OVIE EJARIA Couldn’t unlock the Dons defence in the first half and had one effort himself that didn’t test Lewis. Had a few bursts into the box as Rangers pushed but wasn’t influential enough overall. 6
DANIEL CANDEIAS Looked in the mood from the off as he posed Aberdeen plenty of problems on the right but his final ball wasn’t good enough when it really mattered. Not as effective after the break. 6
RYAN KENT Has become an increasingly integral part of the Rangers forward line recently but he didn’t see enough of the ball to hurt Aberdeen in the first half. Got more involved and had a couple of efforts but couldn’t find the route to goal. 6
UMAR SADIQ On-loan Roma striker appeared to have no chance of featuring here a couple of weeks ago but got the nod from Gerrard to lead the attack. Couldn’t test Lewis with an early header and chances were sparse in the first half. Didn’t improve after the break as he was continually caught offside and a booking for diving summed up a poor afternoon. 4
Substitutes:
SCOTT ARFIELD (for Candeias) Missed out on a start after recovering from injury and was thrown on for the final minutes as Rangers chased an equaliser. 3
GLENN MIDDLETON (for Jack) Youngster couldn’t celebrate his new Ibrox deal in style after being introduced late on. 3
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
