CRAIG Moore believes Tom Rogic could still move on to a top club in England or Europe - despite committing his long-term future to Celtic to 2023.
Former Rangers captain Moore helped Rogic when the playmaker was starting out on his career in his role as an elite player mentor with the Australian Football Federation.
The Socceroos great was always convinced the No.10, who took over two years to establish himself in the first team at Parkhead, would come good in Glasgow.
He has been delighted to see his compatriot become a key man for the Scottish champions both domestically and in Europe during the last three seasons.
Rogic, who turned 26 last month, was tipped to depart last season after turning down an initial contract offer from Celtic and was linked with moves to both Arsenal and Southampton.
However, the player, who is currently away with his country at the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates, agreed a lucrative new five year deal in May.
Moore, who also played for Crystal Palace and Newcastle United in England as well as Borussia Moenchengladbach in Germany, feels he could still try his luck abroad in seasons to come.
“A lot of people didn’t believe Tom could come to Scotland and do well for Celtic,” he said. “I was always convinced he would.
“I knew what was there and what he had to offer. He is very good in his area. He is good at creating opportunities, he is good at scoring goals, he is good at assisting.
“I am really happy for Tommy. He has done really well. He has been a great player for us, for the national team as well. But these are things that I kind of thought would happen. I wasn’t really surprised.”
Moore added: “I think he made the right decision last year. Moving on probably wasn’t right at the time. Tommy has signed for another five years and will continue to play well.
“From Celtic’s point of view, they they have protected their asset until 2023. He may well go in that period of time. But they will get money for him if he does. There may come a time where he does move on.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
