RANGERS have called for the Scottish FA disciplinary procedures to be reviewed as a matter of ‘extreme urgency’ after Allan McGregor was hit with a two-match ban. A spokesman for the club said: "Rangers has no option other than to accept this decision. However, it is abundantly clear questions about the current disciplinary system, which we believe is flawed, must be posed."

The statement came after the club lost its appeal against Allan McGregor's retrospective punishment for a challenge on Aberdeen's Lewis Ferguson during the Ibrox club's win at Pittodrie.

And the Herald's Stewart Fisher believes that McGregor can have few complaints about the ban, but points out that the decision will probably leave many Rangers fans feeling hard done by after other players have not been punished for similar challenges.

Former Motherwell, Rangers and Dundee United goalkeeper Ally Maxwell says that McGregor is entitled to protect himself as a goalkeeper, but the Rangers goalie's use of his studs was unacceptable. Maxwell said: "If you are coming up, studs up, then that is just poor technique."

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has urged his Celtic players to believe they are good enough to overcome their Europa League rivals Valencia – and go all the way in this year’s competition. "Why can’t you [believe you can win the Europa League], you know? You always have to believe that you can win every game you play," said Rodgers. "When it finishes, whenever that is, then you can assess it and look at it."

The Celtic manager also revealed that left back Kieran Tierney will not be fit in time to face Valencia tonight but revealed two other defenders will be able to play after ecovering from their own injuries. "Kieran Tierney has trained but won't be available," said Rodgers. "Emilio Izaguirre and Jozo Simunovic are fit and available."

The Herald's Graeme McGarry thinks that he has the solution to Celtic's problems at full back tonight due to Tierney's absence, and it doesn't involve Emilio Izaguirre.

And the Herald's James Cairney has taken an analytical look at Valencia and has pointed out a few weaknesses in the Spanish side that Celtic could exploit tonight.

Hibernian have appointed Paul Heckingbottom as their new head coach on a three-and-a-half year deal. "It’s an honour to be named head coach of Hibernian - a club with a rich history and commitment to playing attacking football," said Heckingbottom. "There is so much potential here and the club has everything going for it."

Well-travelled coach Malky Thomson, now head of the intermediate academy at Rangers, says that his vast experience as a coach will serve the youngsters at Auchinhowie well. Thomson said: "I think it is good for the kids to have a coach that has got a bit of experience, that has been at every level and understands it."

And Thomson is hoping that a move to the United States will help his son develop into a top class tennis player. Connor Thomson, 18, is preparing to head to South Carolina to begin a scholarship as he takes a significant step forward in his career.

Partick Thistle midfielder Gary Harkins says he is determined to remain unbeaten during his second spell at the club, as the Jags look to continue their unbeaten start to 2019. Harkins said: "We’re on a good run and we are just desperate to keep that going and keep that good feeling around the place for as long as possible."

And in rugby, Scotland's Six Nations hopes have been dealt a major blow following the news that full back talisman Stuart Hogg will miss the remainder of the tournament with a shoulder injury picked up in the defeat to Ireland at Murrayfield last weekend.

Neil Lennon has said that he plans to take some time out of football in the short-term but didn't rule out a return to Scotland's top flight, in an interview with the Scottish Sun.

Ex-SFA chief executive Gordon Smith has urged the SFA to get back to basics with the bideo review rules that he created during his stint in charge of Scottish football's governing body, according to the Daily Record.
