DAVIE Weir last night predicted “the sky is the limit” for Alfredo Morelos – if the Rangers striker can learn to curb his fiery temper.

Morelos took his tally for the 2018/19 campaign to 27 with four goals in the 5-0 win over Kilmarnock in a William Hill Scottish Cup fifth round replay at Ibrox last Wednesday night.

Weir, the former Rangers captain and assistant manager, is now the pathway development manager at Premier League club Brighton.

The former Everton and Scotland defender has no doubts the Colombian is capable of playing at a higher level in future.

However, he feels the 22-year-old, who has been red carded three times this season, must channel his aggression in order to fulfil his full potential.

“He’s got a great record and strikers are the most important part of any team,” he said. “He will be on a lot of people’s radars, but he’s at a great club and they value him.

“He’s come from Finland, he’s been successful in both leagues. He’s on a good trajectory, the sky is the limit for him. Goalscorers are at a premium. They change everyone’s season.

“He’s got all the attributes - the biggest one is him scoring goals. Obviously, there are things he needs to improve on, but the raw materials are definitely there.”

Weir added: “We all get emotionally involved and react. But if you are continuously doing the same thing then there is a problem.

“I played with loads of players who had discipline problems, but we are all like that to a certain degree.

“We have all had it where the red mist comes down. When you look back in the cold light of day you think I shouldn’t have done that.

“There has to be emotion and passion involved. There is a fine line between getting a red card and being successful.

“The best players play on the edge, but hopefully Alfredo, who is still a young man, will learn who to use that passion in the right way.

“Missing games is the biggest punishment and he has missed a lot of games already.”
