HIBERNIAN youngster Sean Mackie admits he is honoured and proud after achieving his lifetime ambition of a Scotland call-up.

The 20-year-old will be involved in the international set-up for the first time later this month after being named in Scot Gemmill’s Scotland under-21 squad for their friendlies against Mexico and Sweden.

The versatile left-sided defender will be joined by Easter Road striker Oli Shaw for the double-header in Spain and now hopes to follow his team-mate by becoming a Scotland regular.

He said: “It’s a real honour and it was a proud moment when I heard.

“Obviously Oli’s been involved through the age levels and it’s always been an ambition of mine to follow in his footsteps.

“First and foremost, I’ve had to work hard to try and get in and around the first-team at Hibs, but playing for Scotland is something that should always be in the back of your mind.

“Everyone wants to play for their country. So I’m grateful that Scot Gemmill and his staff have given me the opportunity to show what I can do and I’ll do everything I can to make a good impression over the trip to Spain and hopefully get some minutes in the games.”

Mackie, signed from Raith Rovers three years ago, made his Hibs debut in April 2017 but – after being loaned out to Edinburgh City last season – has made his top-team breakthrough this term with 10 outings.
