David Weir has insisted that Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos will be on the radar of the top clubs in England after his goal scoring exploits this term for the Ibrox side.
The Colombian has netted 28 goals so far and that alone will make people take note, according to the former Rangers assistant manager.
Speaking on behalf of BT Sport who will screen tonight’s game at Easter Road between Hibs and Rangers, Weir said: “His name will be cropping up at clubs in England because he’s scored 28 goals this season.
“He’s played in Europe and been effective.
“Every club in England will be looking all over the world for goal scorers and his name will crop up.
“He’s young, he’s an international and he’s scoring goals in a competitive league. He will be on a lot of people’s radar.”
Morelos’ achilles heel is his temperament with the striker collecting four red cards and 18 yellow cards this season, stats that are almost as eye-catching as the goals he has scored.
And for Weir there is no issue that his disciplinary problems could be a barrier to a move elsewhere this summer with bids anticipated for the forward.
Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers is the latest to have been credited with an interest in the player and Weir is confident that Morelos will have been discussed at various clubs due to the season he has enjoyed in front of goal with Rangers.
“Morelos has his strengths, which are obvious, and his weaknesses, which are also obvious,” he said of the 22-year-old whom Rangers signed from Helsinki for £1m last June.
“People will weight these things up but there is bound to be interest.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
