THIBAUT COURTOIS Saw a Burke strike go by his post early on and wasn’t troubled thereafter. Hardly involved until a late scramble saw him claim a deserved clean sheet. 6
TOBY ALDERWEIRELD Saw plenty of the ball as Belgium built from the back. Didn’t have to break sweat defensively. 7
VINCENT KOMPANY Rarely under any kind of pressure as he dealt with what little Scotland could throw at him comfortably. 7
JAN VERTONGHEN Certainly wasn’t his toughest encounter of the season. Passed a straightforward test with flying colours. 7
THOMAS MEUNIER Shrugged off an early knock and was always looking to get involved. Not Belgium’s top performer, but still an effective one on the right flank. 7
YOURI TIELEMANS Has developed into one of the most highly-rated up-and-coming midfielders in the game. Strolled through this one with ease and composure. 7

AXEL WITSEL Stung Marshall’s palms with a drive from the edge of the area in the first half and came close early in the second. Ensured Martinez’s side won the midfield battle and controlled proceedings. 7
THORGAN HAZARD Didn’t have the impact of his brother but was still a key influence down the left for Belgium. 8
KEVIN DE BRUYNE Should have scored after 16 minutes and then almost did with a curling effort from range and a second half free-kick. An unsurprisingly excellent showing that was capped with a terrific finish. 9
EDEN HAZARD So, that’s what £130million buys you. A sublime performance from a classy operator as the new Real Madrid man proved why he is one of the best in the world. Popped up everywhere and was involved in everything. 9
ROMELU LUKAKU Provided the focal point to the Belgian attack and should have scored before he did as he headed home on the stroke of half-time. Tap-in second sealed the win. 9
Substitutes:
DRIES MERTENS (for Tielemans) Got the final 13 minutes as he added fresh legs in the middle of the park for Belgium. Not that they needed them by that stage. 4
THOMAS VERMAELEN (for Kompany) Introduction allowed Kompany to take the acclaim from the home crowd. 1
YANNICK CARRASCO (for T. Hazard) No time to make an impact in the closing seconds. 1
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
