SHEYI OJO hopes a loan switch to Rangers will help bring out the best in him once again as he looks to thrive under the pressure at Ibrox this season.
The winger has become the fifth signing of the summer for boss Steven Gerrard after putting pen-to-paper on a move from Liverpool on Tuesday.
Ojo follows Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie, Steven Davis and Greg Stewart in joining the Light Blues.
And the 21-year-old, who has had loan spells with Wigan Athletic, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham and French side Reims in recent years, is eager to prove his worth in the coming months.
Ojo said: “I am really excited with my first impressions around the training ground and seeing all the players. I feel really settled in and I am ready to go.
“The last 18 months, two years, I have not really had that consistent opportunity of football and when I heard Rangers were involved, I spoke to my representation, to the gaffer, Steven Gerrard, and I spoke to Liverpool as well. I think all the parties believed that this was the right destination for me and for my career this season.
“[The manager] just wants me to be myself. When I am playing myself, playing consistently and injury free, then everything goes well. I haven’t had that consistency, so with Rangers this season it is about playing how I have always played, to play freely and just enjoy my football.
“I spoke to Andy Firth and Ovie (Ejaria) was here last year as well and I spoke to him. I know a few other players that play in this league as well. So with all of the advice that I have got, it was an easy decision.
“There were other clubs that I could have gone to but I felt this was the right decision for me.”
The capture of Ojo is another boost for Gerrard as he continues his preparations for the upcoming Europa League qualifiers and another crack at the Premiership.
The Englishman has made 13 appearances for Liverpool after rising through the Anfield ranks.
Ojo told RangersTV: “I have had experience of [European football] with Liverpool, but to actually play in it and be a hopefully big part of it, it will be a really good experience. It is one that I am looking forward to.
“I spoke to Andy before the Old Firm game that Rangers won 2-0 and watching the atmosphere around the stadium and the fans, it was really exciting.
“It is something I am looking forward to being a part of.
“I am with Liverpool and if you play for those big clubs you have to deal with the pressure.
“With what I want to achieve in my career, I have got to be able to deal with that. I think it is going to be a good challenge.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
