IAN DURRANT started off on the The Journey with Rangers in the Third Division. Now he hopes Steven Gerrard can finish it in the Premiership.
The road back to the top flight was a long and arduous one for the Light Blues and recent years have been just as difficult at Ibrox.
Progress was made in the last 12 months, though, and Gers legend Durrant is confident Gerrard is heading in the right direction this term.
Durrant said: “Everyone wants to see all the good work from Mr Gerrard come through on the park.
“Hopefully we can win things now and you can see the great development at the club with the profile that he has got. Hopefully he can take it that step further and get the Rangers fans celebrating.
“It is about winning things at Rangers and it has been a few years now. So hopefully they can go and try and rectify that.
“We have been through a few hard years now, I was part of that as well, and there wasn’t a lot of positives, it was all negatives.
“The manager is a winner and that is what it is all about at Rangers. You have to win matches, you have to win trophies and put silverware in that cabinet.
“We were used to winning and it is standards at Rangers. The manager has set standards alongside Gary McAllister, Michael Beale and the staff and they want to take Rangers as far as they can.”
Rangers finished second and nine points adrift of Celtic in Gerrard’s first term as boss.
And the objective is clear at Ibrox second time around.
Durrant said: “The first year was always going to be hard for them trying to build a new team but you can see with the development and the signings he has made that he is on the right track He wants another couple in as well so they are going to put a challenge in.
“The players will know the standards that Mr Gerrard sets and what he wants and if you are not up to the standards then you won’t be part of it.
“You have got to stand up and be counted this year and it won’t be easy. You can’t accept second place. A lot of people, in hindsight, would have said ‘let’s consolidate and finish as high as we can’ last year. Now, the way the manager is speaking and developing his team, he will set the bar as high as he can and the number one priority is to win the league.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
