STEVEN GERRARD has warned Rangers they will need to sharpen up defensively after seeing his side overcome Hamilton to reach the last eight of the Scottish Cup.
Accies were level at the break as Lewis Smith cancelled out Scott Arfield’s opener and had another clear chance as Glen Kamara made a superb late challenge on Mikel Miller.
Rangers would eventually run out 4-1 winners as Joe Aribo and Alfredo Morelos netted before Arfield completed the scoring with a stunning strike late on.
The final result ensured it was a pleasing afternoon overall for Rangers but boss Gerrard wasn’t completely satisfied with their showing in difficult conditions in Lanarkshire.
Gerrard said: “It's job done and we finished the game off really well by being clinical in front of goal.
“We had a few issues defensively in the first half that we had to iron out.
“Once we did that we were comfortable but Hamilton had caused us problems in the first half.
“Defensively, we weren't at it. They troubled us more than I expected because we pride ourselves on our organisation and shape.
“But at the back, we weren't on the same page at times. They had another decent chance besides the goal.
“We should have been better and if we were, we'd have been a lot more comfortable.
“I wanted the luxury of having the game won early but I didn't get that. That's credit to Hamilton and how they played.
“But in the second half we controlled everything and scored some strong goals.
“Glen's tackle could have been pivotal but Hamilton had two good chances, as well as their goal.
“I don't want to disrespect them but it came from our defensive shape not being good enough, rather than being out-played.
“We weren't on the same wavelength but maybe it's because we've changed the partnership and they're finding their feet together.
“There wasn't much wrong in our general play and chance creation but we weren't strong enough defensively.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
