THE qualifying rounds for next season's Champions League and Europa League will primarily consist of one-legged ties, UEFA have announced.
Aleksander Ceferin, president of European football's governing body, announced the change in format at the association's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland this afternoon.
The qualifying campaign for next season's continental tournaments will begin in August and will conclude at the beginning of November.
The remaining games from the 2019/20 campaign will still go ahead with the Champions League and the Europa League set to restart on August 7 and August 10 respectively.
Deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti confirmed that the remaining Europa League last-16 ties - including the second leg of Rangers' clash with Bayer Leverkusen - will go ahead, with the remaining fixtures thereafter taking place in Germany.
The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the Champions League will be played in Lisbon, Portugal from August 12-23.
The remaining last-16 games will be played on 7/8 August and the original venues have been pencilled in but this could change if it is not deemed safe to do so.
The Estadio Dragao, home of Porto, and Guimaraes' Estádio D. Afonso Henriques will be used as venues for the last 16 if matches cannot be played as originally planned.
The last 16 of the Europa League will be played on August 5/6, when Rangers will face Leverkusen away. The quarter-finals, semis and final will then be played in Cologne, Duisburg, Dusseldorf and Gelsenkirchen from August 10-24.
Looking ahead to next season, the Champions League qualifiers will begin with the preliminary round on August 8/11, followed by the first round on August 18/19, the second round on 25/26 August and the third round on September 15/16. All of these ties will be one-legged.
The final play-off round will go ahead on September 22/23 and 29/30, and will feature home and away legs as normal.
The 2020/21 Europa League campaign will begin with the preliminary round on August 20, the first qualifying round on August 27, the second round on September 17, the third on September 24, with the play-offs going ahead on October 1. All of these matches will be one-legged ties.
The venue of each one-legged tie will be determined by the draw, with whichever team is drawn first as the home side.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
