Jackie McNamara insists Celtic's misery should be compounded after last weekend's Rangers defeat at Parkhead - because the Light Blues are NOT a good team.
The former Hoops defender's claims come on the back of a 2-0 win for Gers in one of the most one-sided Old Firm derbies in recent years. The dominant display from Steven Gerrard's men did nothing to impress McNamara, however, who says it's down to their manager who is a clever tactician and sets up his side well.
On the defeat, McNamara told 67 Hail Hail podcast: "I think the frustrating thing is they are not a good side, they are not a good team but they were made to look organised, the way [Gerrard] organises them every game. But you need to combat that and that's the frustrating thing. We've done it at Ibrox."
Ex-Dundee United and Partick Thistle manager McNamara also criticised Celtic for the tempo at which the played the game, saying they appeared to treat the derby like a testimonial match. And he recalls hoping ex-teammate and Celtic boss Neil Lennon would change things earlier than he did, bringing on the likes of Albian Ajeti and Leigh Griffiths.
"A lot wrong with the shape of the team and the application of the team – going into tackles and riding tackles," he added. "It was like a testimonial match; it just played into their hands. You’re watching it unfold, and you’re going ‘right, let's make a change, let’s change something here.’ At half-time, you’re expecting something different."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
