RANGERS got their Europa League group stage campaign off to a perfect start in Belgium on Thursday night with a 2-0 win over Standard Liege.

A first-half penalty from captain James Tavernier sent Steven Gerrard's men on their way to victory before a last-minute stunner from Kemar Roofe sealed the three points for the men from Ibrox.

The former Leeds and Anderlecht striker received the ball in his own half and held off challenges from two Liege players before a neat touch sent the forward scampering away from a third.

With the clock winding down, Roofe glanced upwards and spotted Liege goalkeeper Arnaud Bodart off his line and struck a sensational looping shot from the halfway line that sailed past the Belgian and nestled in the back of the net.

The goal will surely take its place as one of the greatest ever scored by a Rangers player in European competition - and Roofe is now the proud owner of a Europa League record that will take some beating.

Accodring to analytics platform Opta, Roofe's wonder goal was hit from 54.6 yards out - the greatest distance of any goal ever scored in the competition.
