Alex McLeish has heaped praise on Rangers' sporting director Ross Wilson for landing Calvin Bassey this summer.
The left-back joined on a permanent deal from Leicester City and has already gelled well with his teammates and featured in seven games for his new club. At just 20-years-old, Bassey was perhaps not expected to make such an impact so early. With Borna Barisic in front of him, it was due to be a quiet introduction for the player to his new surroundings.
Injury has forced Steven Gerrard to pick Bassey for a few starts and sub appearances so far, and McLeish believes the Ibrox side have landed a top prospect with a serious future ahead of him. And the ex-Gers and Scotland manager applauded Wilson and his recruitment staff for securing the youngster.
Speaking to Ibrox News, Big Eck said: "[Bassey will] be happy to get his first action at the top level and he’s slotted in remarkably well at the left-back position.
"I remember my debut, I was absolutely bricking it. I just thought, ‘Do what you can do and listen to the senior players around you’, and that’s what Bassey will be doing. That’s what the recruitment guys are there for. It’s a new system over the last 10-12 years, the chief scout with his army of people and the sporting director [Ross Wilson].
"He’ll have a database and he’ll be ready to snap up top players without spending huge amounts of money.
"For Rangers to get Bassey in from England is a master coup. Rangers deserve real credit for the transfer."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
