Jermain Defoe has revealed Sky Sports were UPSET when he penned a new deal at Rangers - as they wanted him to join their on-screen punditry panel.

The veteran striker has worked a handful of games down south in an analyst role with the TV giants. And he claims the broadcasters had hoped he would be ready to take a more prominent role as a pundit. However, the 38-year-old opted to continue his playing career and signed a new contract at Ibrox.

Defoe also claimed he fancies being able to be both a pundit and a manager when he finally calls it a day. Speaking to Reece Mennie on Mennie Talks, the attacker said: "I'd love to do both! I've done some of the punditry work and I have a good relationship with Sky, with the punditry stuff they were actually upset that I signed a new contract at Rangers, but I'd like to do pundit work.

"When you're a pundit and talking about the game, you're talking to the viewers. If I'm talking about a goal, I need to break it down, why he did this, why he did that, as that's what people like seeing. Even if I'm with family at home and we're talking about a match, I'll see things that people don't see and talking about it can help people watching at home."

Asked if he'd rather be a manager or coach, he added: "I would rather be a manager to be honest, of course do a bit of coaching especially forward coaching, but I would like to be a manager. Especially for the managers that I have played under looking at how they like to do things, how they are. I think a big part of being a manager is how you deal with people, knowing how to speak to the players and just understanding what people need. I would like to be a manager of course."
