DANNY Wilson has confirmed that Glasgow will be in the market for another stand-off in the summer, budget permitting, but declined to say whether Munster’s Ben Healy was his specific target.
Reports in Ireland earlier this week said that the Warriors had made an offer for the 21-year-old Healy, who is Scottish-qualified. The club’s official response was to say that they did not comment on speculation, but yesterday, without naming names, Wilson made it clear that he wanted to add to his squad both in that position and at full-back.
“We are certainly in the market for adding to our 10 depth,” the head coach said. “We had to finish recruitment early [this summer because of Covid]: the two positions we were looking to fill were 10 and 15.
“It’s still something longer term that we need to strengthen. Hopefully I’ll have a bit more news soon as, but right now from a policy point of view I can’t really develop too much more.”
Meanwhile, Wilson has made just two changes to his 15 for tonight’s PRO14 game against the Dragons, bringing in Fotu Lokotui for his first start in the back row and restoring Niko Matawalu to the left wing. Lokotui, who has made five substitute appearances since signing in the summer, replaces the injured Tom Gordon. Matawalu takes over from Ratu Tagive on the left wing. Tagive drops to the bench, while lock Hamish Bain comes into the 23 after missing Sunday’s win over Cardiff.
Besides Gordon, seven Warriors are listed as unavailable due to injury: Chris Fusaro, Richie Gray, Adam Hastings, Stafford McDowall, Leone Nakarawa, Tommy Seymour and Kyle Steyn. Wilson is hopeful that both Gordon and Seymour will be fit for next week’s Champions Cup pool game against Exeter, but he is less optimistic about Gray and Nakawara.
Ten players are absent on international duty: Fraser Brown, Scott Cummings, Matt Fagerson, Zander Fagerson, George Horne, Sam Johnson, Huw Jones, Oli Kebble, Ali Price and George Turner.
Glasgow Warriors (v Dragons at Scotstoun, [Saturday] 7.15pm): G Bryce; L Jones, N Grigg, R Fergusson, N Matawalu; P Horne, S Kennedy; A Seiuli, G Stewart, E Pieretto, L Bean, K McDonald, R Harley, F Lokotui, R Wilson (captain). Substitutes: J Matthews, A Allan, D Rae, H Bain, T Ioane, J Dobie, B Thomson, R Tagive.
Dragons: J Lewis; J Rosser, J Dixon, J Roberts, A Hewitt; S Davies, R Williams (captain); B Harris, E Shipp, Jarvis, B Carter, M Screech, H Keddie, T Basham, O Griffiths. Substitutes: R Hibbard, C Maguire, C Coleman, J Maksymiw, H Taylor, T Knoyle, N Tompkins, O Jenkins.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
