Hearts have announced that Michael Smith has signed a contract extension.

The Tynecastle defender will continue to pull on the maroon jersey for the next 18-months after penning a deal through to 2022.

With 14 Northern Ireland caps to his name, Smith is one of the most experienced players in the Robbie Neilson’s squad. He joined Hearts after leaving Peterborough United in 2017.

To date the 32-year-old has made 121 appearances for Hearts and has five goals.

Speaking to the Hearts Website, Robbie Neilson said: “I’m really pleased that Michael has agreed a contract extension.

“Michael’s a really important player for us and a top player too. He has a wealth of experience and is an international standard player, which is great for the club.

“He’s been a mainstay from when he joined Hearts and I’ve really enjoyed working with him since I’ve come in, and I know he’s a player the younger guys look up to as well.”
