FORMER Celtic manager Dr Jozef Venglos has died at the age of 84.
The Slovakian had a single campaign in charge of Celtic back in season 1998-99, where his most notable achievements were the signing of Lubomir Moravcik and a 5-1 Old Firm derby triumph over Rangers.
Moravcik – a bargain capture of just £350,000 - had inspired that win along with a double from Henrik Larsson, but it was a difficult season for Celtic on the whole with their city rivals going on to secure the Treble.
That led to the end of the short Venglos era at Celtic Park, with John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish taking over at the end of the campaign.
Venglos had a spell as manager of Aston Villa in the early 90s when he became the first person born abroad to coach in the English top flight, as well as periods in charge of Czechoslovakia, Sporting Lisbon and Fenerbahce, and he was revered in his homeland having been the first head coach of the Slovakia National Team.
He had a brief stay in Japan at the end of his management career with JEF United Ichihara.
Celtic paid tribute on social media, announcing the news to supporters by saying: “Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Celtic FC manager Jozef Vengloš. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. RIP Dr. Jo, YNWA.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
