Rangers striker Kemar Roofe has been charged by the SFA for his challenge on St Johnstone midfielder Murray Davidson.

The frontman was booked for the incident, but after a second viewing the Scottish football governing body have decided to act further.

It has now been reviewed by a panel of three former referees, who have unanimously decided the incident constituted “serious foul play”.

Roofe has now been offered a two-game ban and it remains to be seen whether Rangers will appeal the charge.

The Ibrox club have until Monday to decide if they will accept Roofe becoming the latest member of Steven Gerrard’s squad to be punished retrospectively, with a hearing set for Tuesday.

Davidson was forced off the Ibrox turf through injury on Wednesday night, but that was not as a result of Roofe's tackle.

The experienced midfielder picked up a calf knock earlier in the Ibrox clash and he now faces a sweat to see whether he will make the League Cup final against Livingston later this month.

Perth boss Callum Davidson commented on the tackle on Wednesday night saying: “It’s one of those, I don’t think there was any malice in the challenge, but it doesn’t look great. TV pictures will slow it down and make it look worse than it is.

“The only thing I know is that I have lost my player from the resulting challenge. Is he a doubt for the final? It’s not great.

“It’s a concern with the cup final coming up. I don’t know if he needs a scan, I will know more in the morning.

“It’s one of those, probably the decisions didn’t quite go for us today. Little things in the game that could have helped us out.”
