THE Europa League clash between Rangers and Royal Antwerp this month will proceed as planned despite tough new Covid travel restrictions imposed by the Scottish Government.

Transport Secretary Michael Matheson unveiled strict quarantine regulations on Tuesday afternoon as the rules regarding travel were tightened once again in an attempt to stop the spread of Coronavirus.

From Monday, all visitors to Scotland will be required to isolate for ten days at a Government specified hotel and foot the bill of £1750 per room at one of six locations near Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports.

But the exemptions currently in place for elite sports - such as those that Celtic used to make their controversial trip to Dubai for a training camp last month - will allow Rangers to head to Belgium next week.

Steven Gerrard's side qualified for the knockout stages by finishing top of Group D this term and the Light Blues will not have to quarantine on their return after the first leg of their last 32 tie.

Antwerp will make their journey for the second the following week with a place in the next round on the line and there will be no requirement for them to isolate when they land in Glasgow.

The travel exemption for training camps has now been limited to Scotland's Olympians and Paralympians as they prepare for the games in Tokyo later this summer.

Scots athletes and coaches involved in both events will be exempt from the travel restrictions and Matheson said: "We're also tightening some of our existing exemptions further. This will include limiting overseas training for elite sportspeople to athletes and coaches preparing for the Olympics and Paralympics."
