ALLY McCoist thinks that the injury sustained by Ryan Jack back in February could have been disastrous for Rangers’ title charge – were it not for Northern Ireland internationalist Steven Davis.
Jack had been a key player as Steven Gerrard’s side opened up a healthy gap with rivals Celtic when a knock suffered against Dundee United resulted in surgery – ruling the midfielder out for the remainder of the Premiership campaign and this summer’s Euros.
In the 29-year-old’s absence, though, the evergreen Davis has come to the fore. The 36-year-old was named the Scottish Football Writers’ Player of the Year, mainly due to his performances in the run-in, and McCoist reckons things could have been very different without Davis’ experience in the heart of the starting line-up.
“With Ryan’s absence, it could have been really, really serious for Rangers,” McCoist said. “But at the same time Steven Davis has come in and been absolutely out of this world towards the end of the season. He’s been absolutely phenomenal.

“So Rangers have been … not fortunate, but a little bit blessed that. Obviously there have been good performances as well from [Glen] Kamara and [Joe] Aribo.
“Injuries to those players – particularly Ryan Jack – could have affected Rangers worse had it not been for the performances of Davis.”
