NEWCASTLE have confirmed Steve Bruce has left the club by mutual consent - as speculation continues to mount linking Steven Gerrard with the role.

Bruce has finally parted ways with the club after reports suggesting new owners, the PIF Group, were looking to replace him.

And after his 1000th game in charge in the loss to Tottenham at the weekend he has agreed to leave St James' Park.

It means the club are now actively recruiting for the manager's role with Rangers sure to be alerted as Gerrard has been mooted as a potential candidate.

The Ibrox boss was bookies favourite for the role with the new Saudi-rich club, but has more recently fallen to an outsider.

Newcastle confirmed Graeme Jones will lead the team on an interim basis, alongside coaches Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence, Ben Dawson and Simon Smith.

Departing Bruce commented: "I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club.

"I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work. There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.

"This is a club with incredible support, and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond."
