FORMER Celtic managing director Fergus McCann has revealed his regret at never meeting Walter Smith face to face.

The Rangers legend sadly passed away at the age of 73 on Tuesday morning as tributes from across the footballing world have poured in to honour his life - both as a manager and a man.

Speaking to Celtic's website, McCann extended his sympathies to Smith's family and his loved ones as he outlined his regret that he never got the opportunity to meet the Ibrox great in person - especially after Smith acted as a pallbearer at Tommy Burns' funeral in 2008.

"I did not know Walter Smith personally but wish to offer my condolences to his family on their loss," he said.

"My one regret was that I never had the opportunity to meet him face to face and commend him for stepping forward to carry Tommy Burns’ coffin – an action which showed the character of the man."
