FORMER Scotland manager Craig Levein is convinced Zander Clark should be handed another Scotland call-up ‘on current form’.
The St Johnstone goalkeeper turned in a stunning display in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Dundee United, making a string of superb saves to press his case for inclusion in Steve Clarke’s latest squad.
Clark won his first international call-up in August for the matches against against Denmark, Moldova and Austria.
But the 29-year-old was left out the last time round by Clarke, who preferred Motherwell’s Liam Kelly for the meetings with Israel and Faroe Islands.
Whilst Clark turned in a magnificent performance at Tannadice, Kelly conceded half a dozen goals in Motherwell’s shock 6-1 loss at home to Rangers on Sunday.
Levein, who had nearly three years in charge of the national team between 2009 and 2012, reckons the outcome of the weekend’s games should have a bearing on Clarke’s selection.
He said: “I don’t think anyone could argue that Zander doesn’t deserve an opportunity.
“If you’re going to pick a game, the game just before the announcement of the squad is the best time to have your best game of the season.
“[You select] players on form. Okay, maybe if it was somebody who had 60 or 70 caps, if it was Craig Gordon who had had a bad game before you selected the squad, you would ignore it.
“The evidence is there that he doesn’t often have bad matches."
The former Hearts and Dundee United boss told the BBC: “But, with a younger goalkeeper or one who’s not long in or around the squad, I think you’ve got to take that into account.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
