STEVEN GERRARD has always had "fantastic leadership qualities" which is why it's no surprise to Gareth Southgate that he's landed a job in the Premier League.

The England manager heaped praise on Gerrard's "fabulous" start to life as a manager when quizzed on his move from 'one massive club to another'.

Speaking to the media today, Southgate said: "Firstly, I was very disappointed for Dean Smith. He's done a brilliant job for Villa and he is an excellent manager.

"It's nice to see another English manager in the Premier League as well, with Eddie going to Newcastle. Two English managers appointed this week.

"Steven has always had fantastic leadership qualities. I was probably a more senior player, I'd have been 30 when he first came into the England squad around Euro 2000; he was always a talent but he always had great drive.

"We know the number of games that he's led for club and country where he made the difference in really important moments.

"He's had a fabulous start to his managerial career. He leaves one massive football club to join another.

"I'm sure it's a challenge that he is looking forward to, it's a great opportunity for him and a chance to test himself in a league where every week there is a different sort of high-level challenge.

"First thing is to stabilise the club. It's a fabulous football club."

Former England striker and TV presenter Gary Lineker was another to comment on Gerrard's move as he wished the former Ibrox boss well.

And he stated it was a "fascinating appointment" before discussing Gerrard's potential in management.

Taking to Twitter, he posted: "Fascinating appointment.

"He’s already shown he has huge potential as a coach/manager and wish him all the very best."
