BARRY FERGUSON has resigned from his post as Alloa Athletic manager.

The Rangers legend has stood down from the job at the League One club following a poor string of results.

A 3-1 home defeat to fellow relegation rivals East Fife on Saturday leaves the Wasps just one point above the relegation play-off spot, and seven off the bottom in eighth.

The ex-Clyde manager joined Alloa in the summer after opting to leave Kelty Hearts following their promotion to the SPFL last term.

But despite some signs of improvement at points through the season, things haven't worked out - and the one time Scotland captain has decided to step aside.

The Wasps will now be on the look out for a new manager to steer them to safety between now and the end of the season, and avoid back-to-back relegations.

A club statement reads: "The Club can confirm that the manager has today tendered his resignation.

"Barry believes that the team needs a change in direction over the rest of the season and he therefore wishes to step aside to allow someone else time to give the players that fresh impetus."

Chairman Mike Mulraney added: “I have huge respect for Barry and appreciate the effort he has given the Club this season, whilst I share Barry’s disappointment in our performances over the last few weeks I have nothing but praise for his endeavour and commitment to the Club in his time with us.

"His professionalism and dedication has been a credit to him and he leaves with our best wishes and thanks.”
