St Johnstone have appealed the red card shown to Nicky Clark shown in their weekend defeat to Rangers.

The striker was dismissed after a VAR review of a tackle he put in on Ryan Jack.

The challenge appeared to be worthy of a yellow card, however, Willie Collum brandished the red.

This left the entire Saints camp incensed. And Callum Davidson has confirmed that the McDiarmid Park club have appealed the decision with the Scottish FA.

He told the media: “Overall I think VAR has been a success, it has been good so far - but the weekend was one I just didn’t understand.

"We are not happy but we will appeal it because it didn’t go to VAR so I think there will be grounds for an appeal on it.

"Nicky was pulled so was losing his balance and he pulled his leg away. I don’t think he caught Ryan Jack at all, it was a knee-to-knee.

“It was hard to see it from the angles we’ve got but there was no malice, there was no intent to hurt anyone. If he’s lunged in at Jack with his feet up we’d say it was a red card but I don’t think it was.”

Saints take on Motherwell this midweek at McDiarmid Park.

The Steelmen are joint-bottom of the Premiership table on 20-points along with Kilmarnock, Ross County and Dundee United.

St Johnstone sit very close to the relegation zone too, but do have a four-point cushion on all of the teams just mentioned.
