David Martindale has lifted the lid on Livingston's average wage.

It was revealed earlier this week that the Lions will likely lose key defenders Nicky Devlin and Jack Fitzwater for free this summer.

Both players are out of contract at the end of the season and are believed to be seeking more rewarding deals elsewhere.

Livi has the smallest budget in the Premiership, so Martindale would never grudge any players the chance to earn better money at another club. That doesn't make losing two of your key players any easier, mind you.

He said: "You always think you could have done more but I can't offer them any more money. My top earner is on £1500 but I've boys playing every week on £700 and our average wage is £900.

"Agents aren't stupid and they wouldn't be doing their job if they weren't saying to their players they could get them £3000 (at another club).

"At the end of their playing days, Livingston aren't going to be there to help them. They will go down as good players for the club but we won't help them pay their bills at 34.

"If you can build up some money in the bank that helps you after football you have to do it. It is the same in every walk of life."

He continued: "If you go through our squad every year it is the same. I don't mind trying to get in two or three players who are starters and then a few squad players.

"So we'll lose some players but we will have continuity elsewhere on the park (with players) who have been here."
