Drey Wright has branded St Johnstone’s opening 45 minutes against Kilmarnock on Saturday as one of the worst performances he has been involved in during his career.

Saints were miles off the pace against their Scottish Premiership opponents in the first-half and could have easily been out of the game by the interval.

Kilmarnock had a goal ruled out for handball before opening the scoring through a Joe Wright header just five minutes before the break.

Callum Davidson hooked James Brown following the goal and Saints remerged for the second half a different-looking team as they aimed to haul themselves back into the game.

Wright was on hand to score a stunning strike from distance on 70 minutes and he was delighted to get a point from a difficult venue and performance.

The wing-back explained: “I think we've had some poor performances, especially poor halves in games going back to the run we were on, but I think that probably tops it.

“That was one of the worst halves I've been involved in. And we all knew it, I think to a man, not one of us could walk into the dressing at half-time thinking they've done anywhere near good enough.

“But the most important thing was the reaction in the second-half and I think we got that. So we have to try and take the positives from that.

“It was just a calamity of errors, I include myself in that. I was nowhere near good enough and it was a theme for the team.

“We were making mistakes and then we make the same mistakes 5-10 minutes later and then again 10 minutes after that. And you just think we're not learning from it; we're not changing anything. It just wasn't good enough.”

Wright’s goal was his sixth of the season and his goals have been a valuable asset to the Perth squad this season as they aim to avoid another relegation scrap.

He continued: “The Kilmarnock goalkeeper is a friend of mine, Sam Walker, I played with him for a number of years.

“I gave him a text earlier in the week that I'll probably score against him at the weekend and it's come true, so it'll be interesting text tonight, I imagine.

“I had a little tester earlier and the space opened up and I caught it quite sweetly and then obviously it presents itself again. I'm not going to turn that opportunity down, and luckily it flew in.

“I think I've said to you before, I've never really been one to worry about myself getting the numbers. I mean if I scored ten goals and we lost those 10 games, I wouldn't be happy with my ten goals.

“It's more about picking up the points of the team, especially at this stage of the season. So I'm happy to contribute today, but then again on a personal note it's nice to be amongst the goals for once.”

On the importance of the point for St Johnstone at Rugby Park, Wright added: “Going into the next game, it will be the same message.

“I'm still looking up the way, but there's just one less game to do it, but it's a challenge we’ve got to rise to and perform more as we did in the second-half, more like a team defending our box well and creating chances.”
