Livingston manager Davie Martindale insists ‘Rolls-Royce’ Callum McGregor could easily play for a top six club in England.

Celtic captain McGregor shone in Scotland’s stunning 2-0 victory over Spain on Tuesday just three days after helping the national team kick off the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a win over Cyprus.

Martindale is a big fan of the midfielder and is adamant that the 29-year-old has what it takes to excel at club level south of the border.

Martindale said: “I look at that bunch of Scotland players and it’s just phenomenal. I think McGregor is a Rolls-Royce.

“I would love to see that lad playing in the English Premier League. I genuinely believe he could play top four, top six in England for me. I think he is a fantastic footballer.”

Martindale revelled in the role of a supporter as he watched Scotland make a flawless start to Group A and insists national team boss Steve Clarke deserves a pat on the back.

He added: “I think Steve has done a fantastic job, I could not have sat there more proud on Tuesday night.

“I enjoyed being a football fan and I went to bed with a smile on my face.

“I think Stevie and his staff have done us fantastically proud.

“We all used to live in hope we could get to major championships and we got there but I think now there is a genuine belief we should be doing that.”
