Stephen Robinson has refused to ove his aim from a top-six finish despite sitting just three points off third.

The Paisley boss insists he won’t get carried away at St Mirren even while all the signs point to a top-half spot and possible European football adventure.

“No, not yet. Can we still get relegated? I will sleep better when I know we can’t get relegated,” he joked when asked if he felt top-six was all but secured.

“Listen, this group of boys just keep defying the odds with the squad we’ve got and the financial problems throughout the season.

“We believed we could come and win today, there was no bravado with that.

“The top six will be guaranteed when nobody can catch us and at the moment people can catch us.”

Asked if Hearts - three points ahead in fourth - are the next target, he added: “Let’s get in the top six first.

“You need a little bit of luck. We had a spell five or six weeks again where we had no options on the bench. You need a bit of luck, if we get that, who knows.”

Little over a year ago Robinson was perhaps looking over his shoulder at St Mirren with minor fears of the drop.

Now, he’s thrilled to have put down a marker and earned a first win at Tynecastle in ten years and in the process edge closer to a stunning season.

Reflecting on his early period at the club, he said: “Listen, it wasn’t my team then. You’re coming into somebody’s else team with different ideas.

“It takes a little bit of time and in football you rarely get it.

“We didn’t hit the ground running at the start of the season either but the belief never wavered in the group or my staff.

“It’s brilliant for St Mirren fans. St Mirren have spent half of the last 30 years out of the top division.

“To come to Tynecastle and give the fans a day to really be proud of, I’m delighted for them.”
