Charlie Mulgrew has left Dundee United.

The experienced defender has been released by the club with a year left on his contract.

The 37-year-old joined the Tannadice club two years ago.

During his first season, he helped the club to a fourth-placed finish and played a key role in helping Tam Courts' men achieve European football.

However, last term was a total disaster for the ex-Celtic and Aberdeen centre-back, as well as the Tangerines in general.

Their dismal form throughout the campaign saw them relegated to the Championship.

A short club statement reads: "Dundee United can confirm Charlie Mulgrew has left the club.

"Signed in June 2021, the veteran defender would go on to make 75 appearances for the club, scoring six goals.

"We thank Charlie for his efforts in tangerine and wish him the best for the future."

The defender struggled with injury and form but continued to be a regular starter when Jim Goodwin came in to replace Liam Fox.

It was no secret that a parting of ways could've been on the cards this summer.

And with Declan Gallagher's arrival, Mulgrew's game time would likely become even more scarce.

The former Scotland international will now search for a new club on the day SPFL action returns after the summer.

Dundee Untied kick-off the season with a short trip to Arbroath. The game will be broadcasted live on BBC Scotland.

Meanwhile, St Johnstone are set to complete the signing of Welsh international Matt Smith.

The 22-year-old has fallen out of favour at MK Dons and it is understood Saints are keen to bring him to Perth on a permanent deal.

Smith still has one year left on his current deal but he could depart the club this summer with Saints circling.

Smith moved to the Milton Keynes-based side 18 months ago from Manchester City, but has failed to cement a starting spot at Stadium MK.

The international scene has been more of a success for Smith and in recent times he represented his country at the World Cup in Qatar.

In total, he has racked up 19 appearances for his country.
