Heriot's went second in the Super Series Championship today thanks to a 45-14 home win over the Future XV - but they only prevailed after a spirited effort saw the visitors go in at the break 7-5 ahead. The Future XV have now lost all four of their games to date, but this one was at least a far more honourable defeat than the 92-14 loss they suffered at the hands of Stirling Wolves last week.

Heriot’s are now second in the table, just ahead of champions Watsonians, who suffered a first defeat of the season on Friday night when they went down 21-7 at Stirling. The visitors had most of the pressure in the first half but could only score once, and after the break the Wolves took control.

“We could easily have been 21-0 down but in fact were 7-0 down,” Stirling head coach Eddie Pollock said. “The defence was incredible. We have a really strong set-piece, and that eventually won the game.”

Watsonians coach Nikki Walker accepted his team had failed to adapt their game plan after their first-half dominance had yielded just that single score. "We made too many errors,” he said. “We are not going to win every week playing expansive rugby and playing pretty. We have to learn how to win ugly.”

Ayrshire Bulls are still clear at the top of the table after their 48-7 win at Boroughmuir Bears on Friday night. Although they briefly fell behind in the first half, the visitors were 24-7 up by the break and had little trouble in wrapping up the bonus-point victory.

“We were really happy with the way we controlled the tempo,” Bulls assistant coach Frazier Climo said. “It was just about sticking to our structures, being patient with ball in hand and relying on our big boys to go through the middle.”
