Airdrieonians and Queen's Park shared the spoils at the Excelsior stadium after the Scottish Championship fixture ended 1-1.

The visitors were dominant at times but were unable to make it count as the hosts defended bravely to take something from the game in tough conditions.

It was Robin Veldman's side's seventh league game in-a-row without a win as they remain seventh in the table.

They started the match well and had the first real chance of the game when forward Louis Longridge found himself in behind and checked past the sliding defender, but his low driving shot was well saved by Airdrie goalkeeper Joshua Rae.

The strong start continued as Dom Thomas looked to make things happen out wide up against the Hibernian loanee Kanayo Megwa, however, the 19-year-old defended well to snuff out the Queen's Park captain.

Rhys McCabe's side first real opportunity came when Lewis McGregor got in behind Veldman's men's defence and fired it in low but on-loan Celtic full-back Ben McPherson, who had a strong showing, sniffed out the danger well.

The visitors grew into the game and started to put more pressure on Queen's Park's young centre-back partnership, and this led to the opening goal 38 minutes in.

Defender Will Tizzard attempted to step into midfield and was punished instantly as Callum Gallagher latched on to it.

He took the ball in his stride, sized up the keeper, and curled it around him with ease to give McCabe's men the lead.

And it was almost 2-0 instantly as Liam McStravick header was saved and Gallagher's rebound was also blocked too.

Tizzard was subbed after this and headed straight up the tunnel as the hosts led at the break.

A strong team talk was needed from the Queen's Park boss at half-time and he clearly delivered it as the visitors once again started strong.

And the equaliser came on 46 minutes after a slack pass out from Airdrie's Rae was played straight to the opposition.

Jack Turner took advantage, showing good composure to tuck the ball home despite the slippery surface.

Both teams clearly wanted to win the match and took risks in playing out from the back. Each team's goalkeepers were tested near the end as the game remained even.

There was late drama to come as substitute Barry Hepburn was sent off just minutes after coming on.

He challenged Mason Hancock in the corner and then kicked out at the opposing player on the ground and was shown a red card.

A draw was probably a fair result overall, as both teams had chances to win the match.
