As far as timing goes, Zach Hemming's arrival at St Mirren didn't allow for excitement. It was a time with more questions than answers over who would be in the building, never mind in between the sticks every week.

Within weeks, though, Hemming had quelled any inquest or criticism over his signing to be No1 under Stephen Robinson.

To be fair, the Buddies boss had made clear Hemming wasn't arriving as a back-up or reserve keeper - even if at first that was met with some concern within the fan base.

After a somewhat shaky second spell at Kilmarnock Hemming wasn't viewed as a suitable or credible rival to Carson - never mind a full-on replacement.

Now, though, fans are clamouring for a permanent deal to be struck to sign Hemming on terms further than just his season-long loan. How quickly opinions can change in football!

There is significant evidence to support the major shift in support for Hemming though with the keeper among the top performers in the league so far this term.

Seven clean sheets in all competitions so far this season tells its own story - even if the defence must be credited with a significant role in that achievement.

However, Hemming has more than proven his ability in his own right this season with countless crucial saves already.

In the Scottish Premiership, Hemming has a 75 percent save rate and has a goals saved above average score of 0.19 - the second-best in the division (ironically, only behind Carson on 0.41).

Perhaps just as important has been Hemming's quick adaptation to life in Pasiley and willingness to join the project and be a key member of a thriving dressing room.

On the pitch Hemming is doing everything right and performing above expectations and off the pitch, the facts remain.

There's no doubt Hemming's partner Caitlin and children Riven and Louie moving to Glasgow to support him this season also plays a key role.

Hemming genuinely seems comfortable at St Mirren and fans have every reason to crave a permanent signing. The mood music is overwhelmingly positive - even extending to precious social media interactions which serve to foster a strong rapport with supporters.

The only issue there is a long-term contract in place with Middlesbrough until 2026. And, like it or not, if the Championship club have been paying attention then there's little chance he'd be allowed to leave without significant cash going in the opposite direction.

At time of writing, it seems unlikely a permanent deal is on the cards - even if Hemming and his family are settled and the goalkeeper is a favourite with supporters.

The one ace up the sleeve in that regard, though, is Jamie Langfield. The former Aberdeen keeper has been a revelation as goalkeeping coach in Ralston.

His track record with goalkeepers in the past five years is incredible. Vaclav Hladky; success, Jak Alnwick; success, Carson; success, Dean Lyness; success.

And that's the reason there should be little concern should Hemming go on to perceived bigger things come the end of the season. In Langfield St Mirren have an expert coach who has received rave reviews from all he worked with as well as current manager Robinson.

In fact, the Buddies boss previously hailed Langfield's work with Hemming to transform him into the reliable keeper capable of match-winning performances over his short time in Paisley to date.

The St Mirren No1 and coach double act is excellent and bodes well for the rest of the season. Beyond that, well either way the future looks bright for both parties.
