Now that I have managed to untangle my body after cringing myself inside out, it is time to address THAT video.

You know what? It’s easy to be critical. Especially when you are given such ripe subject matter.

The video the club released this week essentially holding out the begging bowl to potential investors was, upon first viewing, genuinely mortifying.

Those people who reacted to it in such a way, like myself, have since been accused by some of taking both ourselves and the video too seriously. There may be a pinch of truth in that, but that is only because the matter at hand is in fact so serious.

This, after all, was the culmination of a fundraising initiative that was, according to chairman Jim McMahon, a couple of years in the making. For the sum of that to be a video – which is, admittedly, beautifully shot – seemingly pitched at Hollywood stars and pleading with them to make Motherwell the next Wrexham, was initially both alarming and perplexing.

I should have feared the worst when interim CEO Derek Weir distanced himself a little from what he called a ‘quirky’ video in an otherwise informative and certainly thorough interview released on the club’s social media channels earlier in the week. The chairman has since described it as ‘tongue in cheek’, which seems a frivolous tone to take with such a serious topic.

Was it meant to be a serious pitch for investment? Or a funny video highlighting the laudable aspects of the club, such as its role in the community? It seemed to land somewhere in between, and therefore, not land at all.

Just how bad is the financial situation at the club to have stooped to such a level, was my first question. How could this possibly work, was my next. And how much has it cost?

Well, to answer the last question first, I understand the cost ran into five figures, but that McMahon picked up the bill for that himself. So, fair play to him if that is indeed the case.

As for worries over the financial situation at the club, those were quelled a little by a video subsequently released by ‘Well Society board member Derek Watson, who helpfully spelled out that the club’s future was not precarious (at this time), and that the video was instead an attempt to seek growth.

And then, as Wednesday evening wore on, something strange began to happen. As the torrents of abuse and jokes from fans of opposition teams rained in, and the dozens upon dozens of replies from affronted Motherwell fans beseeching the club to delete their tweet stacked up, so too did the views.

In fact, at the time of writing, the video has been seen over 1.5m times and has been retweeted by Canadian comedian and film star Tom Green to his 375,000 followers with the caption 'Invest in Motherwell Football Club today!'

He had a previous connection to the club, mind you, as he rather bizarrely appeared in one of his early sketches wearing the splendid claret and amber Pony pinstripe away kit of the mid-90s.

Whether he ultimately invests in the club remains to be seen, but I’m willing to wager that the agency brought in to do the video, as well as McMahon himself, would no doubt have been feeling a little smug this morning. As far as they are concerned, it is job done.

I am reluctant to say that the video is so bad, that it is good. Because despite some wags pointing out that it contained perhaps the best performances some of the players have put in all season, that would be a stretch. But maybe, just maybe, it is so bad that it has been effective.

It has certainly got everyone talking, and therefore, paying attention to the club. It has been viewed by a huge amount of people.

Time will tell then if the old adage about there being no such thing as bad publicity rings true for Motherwell. If the club does indeed attract game-changing investment from this, then I will happily retract my po-faced criticisms and doff my cap to those behind it.

And if Taylor Swift does indeed rock up and ‘gie us some dosh’, as the parting shot of the video implores her to, then the embarrassment I felt upon first viewing? I might well be able to shake it off…(sorry, couldn't resist).

AND ANOTHER THING…

Back on the football side of things, I was happy to confirm this week that Mika Biereth hadn’t in fact been recalled by Arsenal, despite a photo of him training with his parent club appearing over the winter break and setting alarm bells ringing in Lanarkshire.

What I didn’t quite expect was the amount of correspondence I received from disappointed Arsenal fans, who thought he should have been given a chance after Mikel Arteta’s shot-shy strikers had drawn a blank in their cup defeat to Liverpool.

Whether he will ever be at a level to play for Arsenal is debatable, but it is clear that Biereth is highly rated by the Gooners, and that we should perhaps enjoy him while we can. I’m looking forward to seeing what a short rest can do for him this month after missing most of pre-season.
