St Mirren are keen on negotiating a deal for Kevin van Veen according to reports.

Earlier today, it was understood that second-tier Dutch club Groningen are willing to send the forward out on loan, who has been struggling for game time after his £500,000 summer transfer.

The 32-year-old has been touted for a potential return to Motherwell, however, the Scottish Sun understands that the Buddies are looking to persuade van Veen to agree on a move to Paisley.

It's thought an agreement is in place between Groningen and St Mirren but Kilmarnock have not yet reached a breakthrough with the Dutch club.

This morning, Motherwell’s assistant manager Stephen Frail was reluctant to rule out a last-gasp attempt to secure a return for their former record breaking frontman.

He said: “I’m not sure anything’s out the water. That could be one of those last-minute things.

“We all know what a fantastic end of the season Kev had, he was absolutely terrific, but I think a big part of that was his team-mates, the way they serviced him, but also the way the manager managed him.

“They have a really good relationship and wherever Kev goes I’m sure he will be an asset to whatever club he joins.”

Towards the end of his historic final season at Fir Park, van Veen was named in the PFA Scotland team of the year and received a nomination for the player of the year award.

Despite that, the Saints who are currently fifth in the Premiership standings are hoping that the prospect of working under Stephen Robinson will be enough to attract the Dutchman and make him agree on a deal.

The former Steelman netted 34 goals at Fir Park, 29 of them during the previous campaign and the Renfrewshire club will hope that securing his services will aid them in their bid to achieve a consecutive top six berth.

In regards to financial agreements, they are confident they can accommodate the demands of his wage around their playing budget.

Kilmarnock are also believed to interested in the prolific striker.

The Rugby Park club, who are fourth in the league table are another team that hold top six aspirations, so van Veen could well be facing a battle for his signature ahead of this evening’s deadline.
