Kevin van Veen has lifted the lid on his decision to sign for Kilmarnock.

Motherwell's ex-talisman joined the Rugby Park outfit on deadline day of the winter transfer window. He signed on loan until the end of the season from Groningen.

While Derek McInnes played a major role in his decision to play for Killie, Van Veen stressed the biggest factor to make a Premiership comeback was because of his family.

"It was a weird window personally," the 32-year-old admitted. "I had a few options abroad in the sun somewhere, but I came back to Scotland just for one reason and that's to see my eight-week-old daughter.

"Kilmarnock won the race. I spoke to the gaffer. I'm happy to be here and want to see how it's going to end in the next few months.

"It was tough. I was going to The Netherlands, but due to a disagreement with the gaffer there, I missed the first few games. After the ninth or tenth game, I got dropped to the bench and then the pregnancy started, so I was in Scotland for five or six weeks.

"Altogether, it was a good ten weeks I wasn't in The Netherlands training or playing, I was training on my own in Scotland. I then returned and I had the option to come back to Scotland.

"It's very tough when you have a newborn and she's changing every day and I wasn't playing in The Netherlands due to a bit of friction, so there was only one option for me and it was to come back. Hopefully, I hit the ground running like last year."

Van Veen made his Killie debut on Saturday at Fir Park where he was once heralded a hero.

The Dutchman was subjected to some jeers as he came on as a substitute for Marley Watkins.

And that was something that he insists he had to rise above after giving everything for them over his two seasons in claret and amber.

Asked about his return, he said: "It was strange, definitely, sitting in the other changing room. I don't know, the people that booed me and stuff, I was a little bit surprised. I've not done anything wrong. But it shows how fans are.

"I did my very best for that club but I will stand above that.

"It was strange, but it was still good to see familiar people I worked with. Those people have been very good to me behind the scenes, we spoke to each other before the game. It was good to see all the lads as well because there's still a lot I played with."
