John Carver has revealed Scotland are facing a wait to discover Scott McKenna's fitness after Grant Hanley pulled out of the squad.

The national team coach admitted McKenna had an injury issue at club level at the weekend and is undergoing an assessment after joining his team-mates on international duty.

It comes after Hanley was confirmed to be missing the friendlies against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland due to an ankle issue as he continues fitness work at Norwich.

"Well, we're waiting to have a look at him," Carver said of McKenna who wasn't involved in training on Tuesday. "He had a bit of an issue in his game at the weekend so he's being assessed as we speak.

"Grant has had an issue with his ankle but he spoke to Steve beforehand. Everybody else is fit and ready to go."

Scotland won't replace Hanley in the squad for the friendly double-header with Steve Clarke content with his defensive options.

Carver confirmed: “No, I think we’re just going to leave it as it is.

“We’ve got enough cover in those positions so I think we’re quite happy with what we’ve got.”

And on Hanley's chances of making the Euro 2024 squad having been out for Scotland for a year with injury problems, he added: "It's up to Grant to get fit again and make sure that he's okay. That's one of the reasons he stayed behind, to work with the people at Norwich.

"I think it is important he is in good condition. If he gets himself fit and starts playing again then there is no reason he can't get back into this group."

Aaron Hickey will also miss the friendly matches through injury with the defender set for up to three weeks on the sidelines.

Carver explained: "We're just waiting to find out, they're saying he could be about two, three weeks before he's back training with the team.

"We're just waiting for that final medical report to see where he is."
