John McGinn has insisted there are positives to take for Scotland despite an "embarrassing" scoreline against the Netherlands.

Steve Clarke's side matched their Dutch hosts for large spells but were undone in the latter stages as the scoreline stretched to a four-goal margin.

And McGinn admitted the full-time result was unacceptable as he urged his team-mates not to allow "bad habits" to creep back into their game ahead of Euro 2024.

Speaking to Viaplay, he said: "We need to win on Tuesday night. We're on a bad run of results.

"Tonight was, up until a certain point, one of our best performances I've experienced but it means nothing at the end of the day.

"They'll be in their dressing room thinking,'How did we score four there and win?'.

"It's up to us to make sure that doesn't happen again, it's happened to us too many times in the past.

"As a group we have kind of gotten away from that and changed it a bit but we can't let those bad habits slip back in."

Further reflecting on the result, McGinn sighed: "It's a strange one looking back. Overall, I think we will look back on it with so much to take from the game but obviously the scoreline is an embarrassing one for us.

"When you get good spells in the game, which we did we had good chances, one of them has got to go in.

"You can say you've played well and had chances but we've got to be more streetwise when it goes to 2-0 and shut up shop a little bit more.

"That's the thing that hurts the most tonight. We're going to go into a tournament where goal difference is so important.

"Over the piece we can take positives - we didn't feel the Netherlands were a million miles away from us - but in those moments towards the end of the game it's not one we look at with many positives."
