Scott McTominay has been recognised as Scotland’s top international performer once again after winning the William Hill SFWA Men’s International Player of the Year award for the second year running.

The midfielder, who has been in outstanding form for both club and country, received the honour at Hampden Park on Saturday after another influential season.

Now starring for Napoli in Serie A following his move from Manchester United last August, McTominay has taken his game to new heights.

His importance to Scotland was underlined yet again on Thursday night when he won and converted the decisive penalty in a hard-fought 1-0 UEFA Nations League victory over Greece.

And as he reflected on his latest individual accolade, McTominay spoke of his pride at being recognised by the Scottish Football Writers’ Association.

The 28-year-old beat off competition from national team captain Andy Robertson, Ben Doak, Billy Gilmour, and Ryan Christie to win the award.

“It’s a team game, but trophies like this make you feel very proud and privileged,” he said.

“My grandparents will be so proud of me winning this, and to see them so grateful and happy is a great feeling.

“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for all the guys, they have done such an amazing job with Steve Clarke. I’m very grateful.”

McTominay’s move to Napoli was a major change after spending his entire career at Old Trafford, but it is one that has clearly paid off.

“Change is sometimes a good thing, but it can be uncomfortable when you change clubs,” he added. “If you go into it with a clear mind and give it everything you’ve got, you’ll have no regrets.”

And as he prepares to earn his 60th cap for Scotland in the return play-off fixture against Greece on Sunday, McTominay left the Tartan Army with a message of intent.

“We will see you at the World Cup next year!,” he remarked.

Given his form and immense contributions in a Scotland shirt, few would bet against him making that promise a reality.
