Former Celtic striker John 'Dixie' Deans has passed away at the age of 79.

The prolific forward, signed by legendary manager Jock Stein in 1971, enjoyed a largely successful spell at the club, making 184 appearances in all competitions, following his move from fellow Scottish side Motherwell.

During that time, he scored 124 goals, winning every major honour in Scotland across his five-year spell with the club.

Born in Johnston, he started his career at Neilston Juniors before going on trial at Albion Rovers in 1965, joining Motherwell that same year.

In 152 league appearances for the North Lanarkshire side, he scored 78 times, prompting Stein to sign him for £17,500 back in 1971.

He set several records for the club during that time, including a scoring record for the most goals in a single game post-war (six). He was also the only player to score two hat-tricks in major cup finals, doing so in 1972 and 1974 in the Scottish and League Cup, respectively - both coming against Hibernian.

He made two appearances for his country in 1974, before leaving Celtic for English side Luton Town in 1976. During his spell with the Hatters, he spent time out on loan with Carlisle United, as well as Partick Thistle, before ending his career in Australia with Adelaide City.

In his autobiography, published after his retirement from football, Deans famously claimed that he met Bob Marley while living in Australia, who recognised him from his days in Scotland, asking the former footballer, "Are you the Dixie Deans who used to play for Celtic?".
