How every Celtic player performed versus Stuttgart

Starting XI

Viljami Sinisalo - 8

In for the under-fire Kasper Schmeichel, the Finland international was handed an opportunity to impress by his manager. Apart from an early save, which he dealt with well, Sinisalo was hardly called into action in the opening stages, on what was a big night for the keeper. Made a good save to his left, which kept the home side out in the second half, while his distribution and catching were solid on the night. Took his opportunity to impress with both hands.

Colby Donovan - 6

In for Julian Araujo, who did not travel to Germany, the young right-back was fancied ahead of Anthony Ralston for this one in the Mexican's absence. He had a tough assignment in Jamie Leweling, who got the better of him a couple of times, though Donovan stuck to his task well. Picked up a booking for his troubles, which put him under pressure for the remainder of the game. Was replaced by Ralston after 55 minutes played, but can be content with his efforts.

Dane Murray - 8

The only change to the centre-back duo, the young defender replaced Liam Scales in the starting line-up. Apart from a slightly overhit pass back to his keeper, Murray acquitted himself well in the opening half, as he dealt with everything that came his way. A performance that will do the centre-back's confidence the world of good going forward - one of the standouts.

Auston Trusty - 7

Thanks to his dismissal against Hibernian, the American was always going to start in Germany, given his forthcoming domestic suspensions. He made a brilliant interception midway through the first half, which was key in keeping his side ahead. A player who seems to step up in Europe, he and his defensive teammate did well in Stuttgart, keeping the home side relatively quiet for long spells. Comfortable.

Marcelo Saracchi - 7

A trusted replacement for Kieran Tierney, the Uruguayan got stuck in defensively, as well as providing an out-ball when given the license to roam forward. A different profile than the man he replaced in the starting line-up, his tireless energy brought drive and vigour to the Celtic backline. A solid showing from the on-loan Boca Juniors man, who worked hard for the duration of the game.

Callum McGregor - 7

One of only three players to keep his place post-Hibernian, the skipper took his usual spot within the Celtic midfield. Made an important block just before half-time to keep his side on top, with the captain allowing the other two middle-men to roam forward when required. Took a sore one when he roamed into the Stuttgart half in the opening stages of the restart, but recovered. A good showing.

Reo Hatate - 6

Given an opportunity to play himself back into form in Germany, the Japanese midfielder had a couple of nice moments in transition, but not anything of note to impact the game in the opening half. In a game where an in-form Hatate could have made a real difference for his side, the out-of-sorts player worked hard, but did not thrive at the MHP Arena. Hooked for Kelechi Iheanacho for the closing stages.

Luke McCowan - 8

The former Dundee captain did not take long to make his presence known, with his side-footed effort nestling into the back of the home side's net after just 30 seconds played. Picked out well by Adamu, he scored his first European goal in classy style. Bringing not just his calmness in front of goal, he looked dangerous whenever he was in possession, providing a driving force in the middle of the park. Came off for Benjamin Nygren after 65 minutes - a good showing.

Yang Hyun-Jun - 7

Now a key member of Celtic's starting line-up, the South Korean's movement and vision found Adamu, who assisted McCowan for the opener. A tireless worker, the winger chased lost causes for the duration of his time on the park - a hallmark of the wide-man's game this season. After his impact waned in the second half, Sebastian Tounekti came on in his place.

Junior Adamu - 7

Trusted to lead the line, the Austrian's first involvement was to set up teammate McCowan with the pass for the opening goal, which was a well-worked move by the away side. No stranger to German football, the on-loan Freiburg man attempted to be the focal point for his side, as well as link others into the game, though his attacking opportunities were scarce. After a quiet restart, he was replaced by Tomas Cvancara in the 55th minute.

Daizen Maeda - 6

A player who has come under criticism of late, Maeda worked hard, with the Japan attacker looking for opportunities to steal the ball from Stuttgart's grasp. He worked hard for his side on both ends of the pitch, as Celtic looked to claw their way back into proceedings on the night. He had a couple of openings as the game progressed, though his composure was lacking in those moments. An admittedly frustrating player.

Anthony Ralston - 3

With Donovan on a booking, it was wise from his manager to bring on the experienced Ralston in the young defender's place. Got away with one for Stuttgart's equaliser, as Demirovic got past the right-back, though he was ruled offside.

Tomas Cvancara - 2

Like the man whom he replaced, Cvancara returned to Germany for the first time since his loan move to Celtic. Found it hard to get going due to a lack of service.

Benjamin Nygren - 2

Last week's scorer had to settle for a spot on the bench in Germany, though most of his work was in the defensive areas following his entry into the game.

Sebastian Tounekti - 3

Did little to impact proceedings after coming on with 20 minutes to go. Worked the keeper, though his shot was tame.

Kelechi Iheanacho - 2

On for the closing stages, as Celtic looked to claw back the deficit. Played in Tounekti for a good chance late on.
