Kris Boyd has defended Rangers over the collapse of the Couhaib Driouech deal, insisting the club did the right thing.

The PSV winger was on the verge of completing a £7million move to Ibrox after flying to Glasgow for a medical, and even taking in the home leg against Jagiellonia Bialystok.

However, by the next day the move was off due to an issue flagged up in the medical. It became clear Derek McInnes wouldn't have the player available for several weeks and this was deemed unsuitable.

This was met with disappointment among the support given the excitement that had been generated around the imminent signing.

However, Boyd insists his old club did the right thing.

He told the Scottish Sun: "If Rangers have spent £7m and then all of a sudden he’s come in and he’s injured for a few weeks, it's the last thing that Rangers want or need.

"Especially the recruitment team because they’ve been battered from pillar to post, rightly so, but then if they go and sign an injured player then you know the first thing that people will say, 'Oh by the way, we’ve signed him for £7m but he’s out for five, six weeks.'

"So I can totally understand that one, especially when it's an injury. I don’t know what type of injury it is and Rangers might feel as if it could be potentially longer.

"And I don’t think Rangers are in a position right now to go spend £7m on somebody that could be a bit of time before they're playing. That’s not good for anyone."
