Rangers released a statement criticising the body, along with Aberdeen, Livingston, Motherwell, St Johnstone and St Mirren expressing "serious concerns" over the report and made clear they are seeking "full clarity".

Auditors Henderson Loggie were commissioned to do an analysis of the game’s governance and the SPFL claimed it came back to show that the organisations commercial knowledge “strong” with “a diverse range of skills”.

A spokesperson for the SPFL said: “We can confirm that yesterday we received a letter on behalf of six Premiership Clubs.

"The letter contained a number of factual inaccuracies, which we have now addressed with those clubs.

"We look forward to discussing the recommendations of the independent governance review with all Premiership Clubs at a meeting soon, once the process has been completed."

Numerous clubs were blindsided by the statement released by SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan following receipt of the report.

It is understood the statement was not seen by the rest of the SPFL board or the member clubs before it was made public.
