Monday's edition of The Herald had a decided legal feel to it. There was the preview of the Radio Scotland series, Scots Law on Trial, as well as the supplement Lawyers 2003.

I am afraid both of these items must be convicted of factual inaccuracy. The preview of the radio series stated that a victim of a crime was ''aggressively cross-examined by barristers''. Now the Scottish legal system recognises no such exotic beast as a barrister. We have advocates.

The second count of the indictment refers to the caption below the photograph of a young lady who graduated from Glasgow University with honours in law. This caption reads ''Ainslie Benzie, BA Hons, Glasgow'' when, of course it should have stated ''LL B, Hons, Glasgow''.

It is no use trying to plead yourself out of this situation. Remember the old legal maxim, ignorantia juris neminem excusat - ignorance of the law excuses no man - and throw yourself on the mercy of the court.
