PUPILS at Stonelaw High School in Rutherglen yesterday made their own

appeal to Strathclyde Regional Council to save their school, threatened

with closure under the latest phase of the schools review.

The pupils released the text of a letter they have sent to the region

claiming their entitlement to education within their local area.

The letter states: ''Modern education requires modern facilities. We

need a new school now. The land is there; the plans exist; we are

waiting for the right decision.'' It concludes by calling on the region

to ''invest in the future of Rutherglen young people. We will not let

you down''.

The area review group has recommended that Rutherglen pupils should be

transferred to Queens Park School, and pupils from Queens Park to

Adelphi in the Gorbals, claiming that the Stonelaw building is no longer

fit for modern education.

Yesterday the school vice-captains, Rachel Tramschek and John Morrice,

revealed plans that had been drawn up ten years ago for a new building

for the school at nearby Calderwood Road on the Templeton playing

fields. The land had been purchased for the scheme but construction

plans were shelved.

Miss Tramschek accused the region of ''twisting the knife'' in now

threatening to close the school completely.
