A BUSINESSMAN whose skills have helped to change the face of Hong Kong
received an honorary Doctor of Laws yesterday at a Strathclyde
University graduation ceremony in the City Halls, Glasgow.
Mr Samuel Wong, 53, a former engineering apprentice in Glasgow's West
End, received his degree from the Principal, Sir Graham Hills, in
recognition of his services to the engineering industry and his
continued links with the university.
Mr Wong was told in April that he was to receive the degree. He
studied engineering at the Royal College of Science and Technology, now
Strathclyde University, between 1960-63.
He later studied at University College Swansea and gained some ''on
job'' experience in Glasgow, London, and Hong Kong before setting up his
own consulting engineers business. Building projects carried out by his
company, now one of the largest and most successful engineering groups
in Hong Kong, include the new 70-storey Bank of China and a 1750-bed
hospital.
Mr Wong, who holds a number of senior posts in Hong Kong, including
president of the Institution of Engineers, still flies the flag for the
university in the colony through his role as chairman of the Alumnus
Group -- Strathclyde University's Old Boys' Association in Hong Kong --
which has hundreds of members.
Mr Wong said he was ''greatly honoured'' to receive such recognition.
Two married couples were also among around 600 students who yesterday
received degrees.
Stephanie and Eric Northcote, who live in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, met at
the start of a one-year post-graduate science course at the university
in October last year. The couple, who are now on the lookout for jobs,
married six months later. They said they were able to help each other
during the course.
In contrast, Tor and Wendy Minsaas, said they took a ''conscientious
decision'' not to sit next to each other at lectures and to go into
different groups wherever possible during their one-year post-graduate
course in business administration.
Mr Minsaas, a Norwegian who now lives in Shawlands, said it was a few
weeks before fellow students realised they were married.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
