The cold snap has brought snow and frost but it also gives us reason to look at big rich reds, the type that don't just give you a peck on the lips but snog you in a really filthy way.
I am, of course, looking at the New Worlds big, brash and passionate bruisers such as the Cabernets and Zinfandels from California or the high altitude malbecs of Argentina. I'd also include virtually every red from the Lebanon, but especially those of Chateau Musar and of course Ammaronl from Italy.
The latter is often overlooked due to the cost and the mystery, I mean let's face it, when was the last time you tried one, so why would you take a chance given the cost? The answer to that, by the way, is because they are so, so rich with dark fruits and cocoa flavours and the finish is invariably long, warming and smooth.
So, stay at home, put the fire on and pour yourself a really filthy full on red and indulge your tastebuds.
Eshcol by Trefethen 2022, Napa Valley
Wow, what a wine for the price. Its a typical Bordeaux blend but the extra sun of the NAPA valley has lifted all the flavours which are dominated by cassis and ripe cherries. The tannins are evident but just enough to give structure to the palate.
